Being featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine is a dream that most startup founders would love to come true.

For Pocket Sun, it did at the young age of just 24, when she was announced as one of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 for finance & venture capital inductees, making her the youngest person to be featured on the cover of the magazine.. It was one of her greatest acknowledgments, but it wasn’t always this way.

In her early years, Pocket received her Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and was inspired to start a venture of her own. Realising that she was often one of the only women in the venture capital scene, she decided to start the world’s first female-led millennial venture capital firm, SoGal Ventures, which focuses on investing in tech-enabled startups from North America and Asia Pacific.

Within the first two years, the two partners at SoGal Ventures invested in 50+ startups from around the globe. Some of which include; Function of Beauty, Lovevery, and EverlyWell.

Using your differences

Before launching SoGal Ventures, Pocket could have never imagined starting her own business, let alone a venture capital firm. But it started like all startups. An itch at the back of her mind, which grew and grew until she couldn’t ignore it anymore.

With no external capital to start, Pocket actually pitched to entrepreneurs to take her investments at as low as $1,000.

Now, the two partners at SoGal Ventures have made nearly 60 investments in three years, and are looking to close USD$15 million in assets under management.

While it was hard for Pocket in the initial stages, most of her success has come from her difference.

“Being different from what they expect is a big advantage”.

Creating a global community

Pocket uses her influence to help over 50,000 entrepreneurs from all around the world close the diversity gap. The SoGal community she started four years ago is now bringing empowerment and inspiration to entrepreneurial minds in 13 cities around the world.
